Arrest announced in Walmart machete assault

On September 24, 2021, at 10:27 p.m., Kearny Police detectives arrested Roberto Delgado-Gonzalez, 29, of Newark, near 237 South Orange Ave. in Newark. Delgado-Gonzalez was taken into custody without incident.

On the application of detectives, a warrant issued the same date charging Delgado-Gonzalez with criminal attempt (murder) (1st degree), aggravated assault (2nd degree), possession of a weapon (3rd degree), and unlawful possession of a weapon (4th degree).

These charges stem from an assault involving a machete that allegedly occurred inside the Kearny Walmart 12 hours before the arrest.

Delgado-Gonzalez is also wanted by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and has active warrants issued from Merchantville Borough Court, Cherry Hill Twp. Court, and Denville Municipal Court. He is currently remanded to the Hudson County jail, South Kearny.

The Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, and Newark Police Division are credited for their assistance in this matter.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C. 3.6(b)(6).
