The Kearny Police Department Traffic Bureau and the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal bicyclist crash that occurred on U.S. Route 1&9 (Truck) on July 26, 2021.

Officers of the Kearny Police Department responded to Truck Route 1&9 southbound near Central Avenue on July 26 at approximately 2:29 a.m. after receiving a report of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. The preliminary investigation indicates that an adult man was riding a bicycle in the left lane of the highway when he was struck by a Nissan Pathfinder being driven in the same direction by a 40-year-old Jersey City woman. The driver of the Mercedes was a 32-year-old Carteret man.

The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Jersey City Medical Center.

The deceased bicyclist is currently unidentified. His identification and the cause and manner of his death are pending an investigation by the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

As of this writing, no criminal or traffic-related charges are expected to issue against either driver involved in the crash.

The bicyclist was described as an adult black male attired in a sleeveless black t-shirt, black shorts, and white sneakers, who rode a blue CitiBike. If any members of the public witnessed the crash or can provide information to help in identifying the cyclist, they are asked to submit an emailed tip to tips@kearnynjpd.org, or to contact Officer Rich Pawlowski via telephone at (201) 998-1313 ext. 2817.
